Donation earned through City’s Solarize Somerville initiative for exceeding home solar installation goal

SOMERVILLE – Local non-profit CASPAR, Inc. (Cambridge and Somerville Program for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Rehabilitation) will soon expand its tremendously positive impact on the community. The organization was selected to receive a 5kW solar array donation that, once in place, will reduce greenhouse gas emissions – and lower utility bills.

242nd Grand Union Flag Raising on Prospect Hill Postponed until Sunday, March 4th

REMINDER: City Pairs Youth with Seniors, Persons with Disabilities for Assistance with Snow Shoveling

Sign up now for winter 2017-18.

The City of Somerville is looking for Somerville teens to pair with residents in need of shoveling assistance during upcoming snow storms. Additionally, Somerville senior citizens and residents with disabilities may contact us to be added to the list. Teens and residents in need of assistance will be paired by the City, which has also arranged a payment structure depending on the residents’ needs. However, payment is handled independently between the resident and the teen with whom they are paired.

Statement from Mayor Curtatone regarding Salvadoran TPS

Ending Salvadoran TPS with plans to deport nearly 200,000 upstanding immigrants who work hard, pay taxes, and contribute to the fiber of our communities is more than unjustified, unnecessary, and inhumane; it’s also reckless and irresponsible. On the heels of the decisions to also end TPS for Nicaraguans and Haitians, this is part of the administration’s continuum of cruelty. 

Community Preservation Act Community Meetings Jan. 16 and 24

The Somerville Community Preservation Committee invites all interested community members to hear about the FY 2018 Community Preservation Act (CPA) historic resources and open space/recreational land project proposals before the Community Preservation Committee, and offer feedback on which deserve to receive funding, at two community meetings in January. The first will be held on Tuesday, January 16 and the second will be held on Wednesday, January 24. Both meetings begin at 7 p.m., and will be held in the community room at the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) at 259 Lowell St.

New Passenger Drop-Off, Pickup Zones Established in Davis Square

Zones aim to eliminate double-parking in traffic lanes and increase safety for all modes of transportation

SOMERVILLE – In an effort to increase safety in one of Somerville’s busiest areas, new street signs are up and five spaces across Davis Square are now designated as passenger drop-off and pickup only zones. The pickup and drop-off zones are open to all users including the public, taxis, and rideshare services. Parking and idling more than five minutes in the designated zones are prohibited. To our customers and neighbors on Summit Street (College Ave to Billingham Street), It is necessary that we repair and replace the natural gas main on Summit Street. Weather permitting, Eversource Gas will begin on Tuesday January 16th, 2018, the work hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please anticipate that the specific areas to be worked will be posted with no parking signs as needed, Somerville Police Officers’ will be on site to assist with the pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Proposed work is projected take between 3-4 weeks.
