CITY ANNOUNCES "SOMERVILLE BY DESIGN" INITIATIVE

Initiative to Launch with Event at Armory on 10/17

SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph A.
Curtatone announced today the kickoff of a new initiative to implement the
urban design and land use goals of the City's SomerVision Comprehensive
Plan.  The program, called "Somerville by
Design," will officially launch with an event at the Center for Arts at the Armory
on Wednesday, October 17th.  The event will run from 6:30 - 8:30pm, and
will feature exercises and activities to help community members explore their

Final SomerStreets event of 2012 to be held on 2-mile stretch of Somerville Ave, includes monster pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating and costume parade, live music on three stages and much more.

SOMERVILLE - The City of Somerville will host the final
event in the 2012 SomerStreets series with a 2-mile celebration along
Somerville Avenue, entitled "Monster Mashed-Up @ SomerStreets" on Sunday,
October 28th from noon - 4pm. 
An Oktoberfest celebration, co-sponsored by Sally O'Brien's and Bull
McCabe's, has also been planned in conjunction with SomerStreets, scheduled for
1:00 - 6:00pm between Washington Street and Bow Street.  Monster Mashed-Up is the longest of the four

City Seeks Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Assessment Grant

The City of Somerville is responding to a call for grant proposals from the EPA. Application will be made to the EPA Brownfield Grant Program. The City is seeking a total of $200,000 in funding to use toward a citywide assessment of brownfield issues.

SOMERVILLE - The fourth annual Joe's Jazz and Blues Fest is
returning for Fall 2012, beginning with a day-long concert at Powderhouse Park
on Saturday, October 27th from noon-6pm.  The festival will then make its way through
local hotspots citywide through November 3rd, including performances
at Cantina la Mexicana, Arts at the Armory Café, Sally O'Brien's, and Johnny

CITY CREWS WORKING TO REPAIR SIGNIFICANT STORM DAMAGE CITYWIDE

Damage Reported in Municipal, School Buildings; Downed Trees and Power Lines Continue to Cause Difficulties in Some Areas; DPW, Public Safety and School Officials Working to Make Repairs in Time for Return to Usual Operations on Wednesday

SOMERVILLE - In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, City
officials - DPW, Police, Fire, and school officials - continue the cleanup
efforts throughout the City of Somerville. 
The storm, which included winds in excess of 70 miles per hour over a
twelve-hour period,  inflicted  uprooted and fallen trees, downed power lines
and other reported electrical outages, and some significant damage to
municipal, school, and residential buildings.

MAYOR TO RECEIVE AWARD FROM MASS. ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL COMMITTEES NOV. 8TH

Mayor Selected as Result of Unanimous Vote by Board of Directors

SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that
he has received notification from the Massachusetts Association of School
Committees (MASC) Board of Directors that they have unanimously voted to award
him their 2012 All-State School Committee Award for Urban Districts.  The award is presented to individuals every
year to honor their contributions to the lives of children within their
district.  Mayor Curtatone was chosen
from nominees from 57 urban districts across the Commonwealth.

Kenney Park Community Meeting 11/19

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 6 Alderman Rebekah Gewirtz, and the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) invite all interested
