North Street Playground Community Meeting 6/27

Mayor
Joseph A. Curtatone and Ward 7 Alderman Robert Trane invite all interested
residents and stakeholders to a community meeting on Wednesday, June 27th
to discuss final design plans for the North Street Playground.  The meeting will be held in the Clarendon
Housing Community Room, located at 268 Rear, Powderhouse Blvd. Section B #15,
beginning at 7:00 p.m.  All community
members are welcome, and light refreshments will be served, courtesy of the
Somerville High School Culinary Arts Program. 

2012 FITNESS CHALLENGE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

SOMERVILLE - As announced at
the City's June 3rd "Carnaval @ SomerStreets" event on Broadway, the
winners of Mayor Curtatone's 2012 Fitness Challenge have been crowned,
including the Top 5 individual winners, and a winning overall team, comprised
of Somerville teachers from the Somerville High School Social Studies
department.  Winners
were presented with gift certificates at a brief ceremony in the Mayor's Office
last week.

SOMERVILLE – Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that the new container garden installed on the steps of Somerville City Hall has been yielding a steady – and tasty – harvest of fresh produce.  The project was created this past spring to promote the City’s urban agriculture initiative and to serve as visible reminder to city hall visitors and workers alike of the ways that urban gardening can improve the diet and the overall health of Somerville residents.

SOMERVILLE -Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and
Acting Traffic and Parking Director Matthew Dias announced today that initial
data suggests that the pilot program to calm traffic, promote pedestrian and
bicycle safety, and increase the parking supply in Union Square is working as
intended.  Traffic radar data indicates
that traffic along Bow Street has slowed by an average of ten percent and
bicyclists report that the new bike lane makes the area safer.  By nearly doubling the supply of parking, the

CITY HOLDS THE LINE ON WATER RATES; NO INCREASE IN FY13

 

SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announces that
water/sewer rates will remain unchanged in Fiscal Year 2013.  Although the City's assessments from the MWRA
increased by a combined 2.6%, the City will maintain rates at the FY12 rate
(please see below for breakdown of rates).

SOMERVILLE - Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone and Office of
Sustainability and Environment Director David Lutes announced today that the
City of Somerville has increased its recycling totals by 51 percent since the
full adoption of zero-sort recycling in November 2011. The shift in recycling
totals was most dramatic in East Somerville, where past recycling rates had not
been as high as in other parts of Somerville.

Curtatone announced today that the Somerville Community Corporation (SCC) and representatives of the neighborhood organization Union Square Rising had accepted his invitation to participate in a mediation process to address issues arising from SCC’s proposal to construct a new mixed-use housing project at the site of the former Boys and Girls Club on Washington Street in Union Square.
