Committee to identify funding priorities for ~$2 million per year in affordable housing, historic preservation, and open space projects.

Do you have a passion for affordable housing, historic preservation, and parks and open space? The City of Somerville wants your help and is now accepting applications for one public position on the Community Preservation Committee, which oversees the selection of projects to be recommended for funding by an estimated $2 million in annual Community Preservation Act (CPA) revenues. Residents are encouraged to apply and applications must be submitted by August 3, 2017.

Nepal Festival Set for Sun, July 9 in Union Square

The Somerville Arts Council and the Greater Boston Nepali Community (GBNC) present Nepal Fest, an ArtsUnion cultural festival taking place from 12 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 9, 2017, in Union Square Plaza. This festival is a chance for the Nepali community to celebrate their culture in their City as well as an opportunity for the rest of the Somerville community to learn about and enjoy Nepali music, dance, food crafts and more! Enjoy yummy Nepali food, while perusing the handicraft and artisan vendors tables, and listening to beautiful music. 
 

Prospect St., Webster Ave., in Union Square to Become Two-Way Streets for Vehicles, Bicycles Starting in Summer 2017

This summer, Union Square will see a significant, permanent traffic pattern change. Beginning in late July (official date is to be determined based on final construction schedules), both Prospect St. and Webster Ave. will be converted to accommodate two-way vehicle and bicycle traffic. Currently, Webster Ave. is one-way from Somerville Ave. to the intersection with Prospect St., while Prospect St. is one-way from Webster Ave./Concord St. into Union Square.

Somerville Arts Council presents Artbeat 2017 on July 14 and 15

ArtBeat is one of the area's largest and most innovative arts festivals, with over a dozen bands, dance troupes, 75 craft vendors, food, and all-age activities.
 
On Friday night, July 14th from 6 pm to 10 pm we have music and interactive performances, then on Saturday, July 15th we shut down Davis Square for the craft vendors, two stages of music, dance in the Somerville Theater, and a host of great interactive peformances from 11 am to 6 pm.
 

Somerville Public Library Announces 2017 “Somerville Reads” Book Choice

The annual “Somerville Reads” campaign returns for 2017, with the chosen title, “El Deafo” by Cece Bell.
 
“El Deafo,” a New York Times bestselling graphic novel about growing up hearing impaired, has received numerous awards, including a 2015 Newbery Honor, the 2015 Eisner Award for Best Publication for Kids (ages 8–12), and the 2017 Massachusetts Children’s Book Award. Cece Bell’s graphic novel memoir will appeal to readers of all ages, and draws on themes of acceptance, friendship, and the celebration of differences.

SOMERVILLE – The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is reporting that mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus, a potentially serious disease spread by mosquito bites, have been found in Cambridge, Boston, and Belmont so far this season.

Mayor Curtatone Launches Clean & Open Elections Task Force

SOMERVILLE –  Somerville voter turnout tends to be higher than national averages, but a new task force established by Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone will take an even broader approach to expanding democratic participation. The new Clean and Open Elections Task Force, which is currently seeking members, will review ways to increase participatory democracy and support clean elections in the city through options such as public financing, expansion of early voting, and more. Interested residents are encouraged to apply for Task Force membership.
