SOMERVILLE – Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone announced today that recently retired Ward One Alderman William Roche has agreed to use his extensive background as a human resources professional to assist the City in the role of interim, part-time Personnel Director.
SOMERVILLE RECREATION ANNOUNCES PUBLIC SKATING HOURS AT TWO RINKS FOR WINTER 2012-13
Second Rink Opened in Early September; Year-Round Skating Programs to Expand in 2013
SOMERVILLE - The Somerville Recreation Department announces the winter 2012-13 public ice skating schedule, which includes increased hours for public skating at two rinks. Located at 570 Somerville Avenue, the Veteran's Memorial Hockey Rink and a second, newly-opened and yet-to-be-named rink include free public skating Monday through Sunday beginning this month. The City of Somerville assumed maintenance and daily operations of the Veteran's Rink through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) in 2010.

Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) invite all interested
community members to an informational community meeting to discuss upcoming
renovations to Kenney Park (located at the corner of Highland Ave. and Grove
St.). The meeting will be held at Ciampa
Manor, 27 College Ave., on Wednesday, January 9th from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.

SCAP TO PRESENT STUDENT HEALTH SURVEY RESULTS AT PUBLIC MEETING JANUARY 17th
Surveys had been Distributed to Somerville High School Students in February 2012; Results will be Presented in ‘Game Show’ Format
Prevention (SCAP) Program Director Lovelee Heller-Bottari announced that the
results of their bi-annual Student Health Survey will be presented in a public
forum on Thursday, January 17th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Cross
Street Senior Center, located at 165 Broadway.
The results will be presented in the form of a game show, with attendees
being divided into teams to discuss topics from the Student Health Survey. Refreshments and prize drawings are included
QUINCY STREET PARK REOPENS WITH RIBBON CUTTING JAN. 24th
Newly Renovated Park Incorporates New Trees and Plants, Benches, Walkways
and Ward 2 Alderman Maryann Heuston invite all interested community members to a
Ribbon Cutting Ceremony celebrating the reopening of the Quincy Street Park on
Thursday, January 24th from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. The ceremony marks the
completion of extensive renovations at the open space on Quincy Street, located
between Somerville Avenue and Summer Street just outside Union Square. Refreshments will be served.
SOMERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES DIGITIZATION OF HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS
19th and 20th Century Official City Documents Now Available through Library Database
and the Somerville Public Library (SPL) are proud to announce the digitization
of historical records from the files of the City's past. Thanks to a
partnership with the Boston Public Library and Digital Commonwealth, a State
repository service for historical documents, the official full-text Annual
Reports of the City from 1843 to 1925 can be accessed free through the Internet
Archive. This archive is a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural
artifacts in digital form.

Somerville to Partner with Local Business, Promote Resident Garden Training
Growers announced this week the launch of the Urban Agriculture Ambassador
Program as part of the City's larger Urban Agriculture Initiative. The
Ambassador program, a training course to be offered from March 16th through
April 6th over four consecutive Saturdays, will be offered to
15 residents, selected by the City and Green City Growers based upon their
interest in urban agriculture and desire to enhance the community. Courses will

SOMERVILLE PUBLIC LIBRARY UNVEILS “AWESOME BOX” PROJECT
Partnership with Harvard University Innovation Lab Helps Residents Share “Awesome” Ideas at Public Libraries
Library, in a partnership with the Harvard Library Innovation Lab, is launching
the "Awesome Box" project at all three library branches in early February. The
first municipal partnership of its kind, the "Awesome Box" will allow patrons
to share "awesome" book suggestions with fellow readers by depositing checked
books into the Box rather than into the regular "Returns" bin. "Awesome" books will be linked to a website
for community members to learn about and explore potential book titles.
