Celebrate Pride with Somerville’s Annual Flag Raising & Big Gay Dance Party

First, please join Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the Somerville Public School Gender and Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) on Wednesday, June 1, at 3 p.m. to raise the Pride flag in honor of LGBTQ+ Pride Month and LGBTQ+ Youth Pride. The ceremony will take place on the City Hall concourse, 93 Highland Avenue. Mayor Ballantyne, Somerville LGBTQ Liaison Jack Treanor, and student representatives from GSA will speak at the event. Following the raising of the flag, the Mayor invites attendees to join her in City Hall for a reception. 

Somerville Water and Sewer Department Conducting Its Annual Hydrant Flushing Program

The City of Somerville’s annual Water System Flushing Program will begin the week of May 9 and conclude in late October. This annual program flushes pipes at high velocities to clean water mains and maintain the highest possible water quality.

Karin Carroll Hired as Somerville Director of Health & Human Services

New Director to Oversee Expansion and Reorganization of Services

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne today announced Karin Carroll, MPH, has been hired as the City of Somerville’s Director of Health and Human Services. In addition to overseeing the ongoing work of the department, Carroll will be charged with expanding and reorganizing services to best serve the community and advance the Ballantyne administration’s focus on equity. 

Supervised Consumption Site Virtual Forum, June 1

The City of Somerville and Fenway Health invite you to a virtual community forum to discuss a local supervised consumption site (SCS) on Wednesday, June 1, at 6 p.m. This forum will discuss what SCSs are, what the need is in Somerville, and ongoing efforts to explore establishing an SCS. This is an opportunity to learn more, ask questions, and share feedback.

On Tuesday, May 31, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne submitted Somerville’s FY23 budget proposal, a $309 million budget that makes key investments in public education, affordable housing, environmental sustainability, and quality of life issues in line with this year’s budget theme of “A Foundation for Progress.” 

City of Somerville FY 2023 Budget Public Hearing

All interested community members are invited to attend and speak at the Budget Public Hearing before the Somerville City Council’s Committee on Finance on Monday, June 6, at 6 p.m. for public input on the proposed FY 2023 municipal budget.

This meeting will be conducted via remote participation online in a webinar hosted on GoToWebinar. There are two ways to participate:

SomerStreets promotes active living and reconnecting with city neighborhoods

SomerStreets: Carnaval returns to East Somerville on Sunday, June 5, from 2 to 6 p.m. (rain date: Sunday, June 12). Enjoy interactive games and activities, three stages of live music and dancing, food from around the world, and local craft vendors, plus a dunk tank to soak your neighbors and elected officials. Programming will extend along East Broadway between Kensington and Pennsylvania avenues. The festival begins at 2 p.m. with an opening parade led by Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, starting on Broadway at Kensington Avenue.

Join your favorite local food producers for the 18th Annual Union Square Farmers Market! Shop local every Saturday from May 14-October 29 from 9am-1pm on the Union Square Plaza. We certainly hope pandemic conditions improve over the season, but starting on May 14 we will have a COVID-conscious masked shopping hour at each Market from 9-10am. Everyone is welcome to shop during this time period, but masks will be required to enter the Market area.
