Somerville Office of Housing Stability to Host Workshop on Searching for Housing with a Section 8 Voucher

Workshop planned for Thursday, September 26 at Somerville Public Library

Join the City of Somerville’s Office of Housing Stability (OHS) on Thursday, September 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a workshop on Section 8 housing searches, including advice and strategies to make your housing search more effective. The workshop will be held in the auditorium at the main branch of the Somerville Public Library, 73 Highland Ave. Interpretation will be provided.

Somerville Prevention Conducts Annual “Compliance Checks” at Local Liquor Retailers

Somerville youth conduct compliance checks as part of prevention, enforcement strategies.

Somerville Prevention Services, a division of the Somerville Health and Human Services Department, announces its annual compliance checks for 2019-2020. The compliance checks, to be completed at all licensed Somerville liquor outlets, will take place from October 2019 through October 2020, conducted by the Somerville Police Department & Somerville Prevention Services.

Annual Domestic Violence Vigil to be Held Wednesday, October 2

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Somerville Commission for Women and RESPOND Inc. announce the annual Candlelight Vigil in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 2, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Statue Park in Davis Square. The vigil is an annual event bringing the community together in remembrance of those who have lost their lives over the last year to domestic violence.
 
In addition to the vigil, attendees will be invited to view the Clothesline Project, a visual display that honors survivors as well as victims of intimate partner violence.

2019 “Somerville Reads” Events and Program Schedule Announced

Copies of “The Haunting of Hill House” now available at all library branches.

The Somerville Public Library announces the 2019 “Somerville Reads” events series. Somerville Read is a citywide reading initiative that encourages all Somerville residents to read and discuss the same book to promote literacy and community engagement. Throughout the month of October, the Somerville Public Library will host various intergenerational programs including discussions, book clubs, and more, all related to the themes found in “The Haunting of Hill House,” the 2019 Somerville Reads selection.

Get a Free Flu Vaccine Through Somerville’s Annual Flu Clinics Offered by Health and Human Services

Somerville residents three years and older eligible for vaccine; Vaccine Clinics begin in October

With students back in school and the cooler temperatures approaching, it’s a reminder that cold and flu season is quickly approaching and it’s time for the annual flu vaccine clinics offered by the City of Somerville Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). All clinics offer free flu vaccines for Somerville residents ages three and older (children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Clinics start on Thursday, October 17, and will be held at various times and locations in the community until the City’s supply of vaccine is exhausted.

Meeting on Local Flooding Issues on Perry, Dane, and Lake Streets, October 15

Join the City’s Engineering Department to discuss flooding issues on Perry, Dane, and Lake Streets at a community meeting on Tuesday, October 15. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Argenziano School cafeteria, 290 Washington St.

Join the City’s Engineering Department to discuss flooding issues on Richdale Ave. at a community meeting on Tuesday, October 29. Residents are invited to share their observations and concerns about flooding on their streets and learn about flood mitigation the City is working on. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Somerville High School auditorium, 81 Highland Ave.

 

Kennedy Pool Re-Opening October 10th Following Renovation

The Kennedy Pool has been undergoing a needed renovation project. The pool will re-open October 10th with Adult Lap Swim & Family Swim at 6:30-7:30 p.m. Please see the online calendar for the Kennedy pool schedule. “Haunted Hall” Halloween Event Returns to City Hall Concourse on October 24

FREE Halloween event features safe trick-or-treating, pumpkin decorating, activities for kids, and more!

Join the City of Somerville on Thursday, October 24, for the annual “Haunted Hall” event on the City Hall concourse from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature costumed safe Trick-or-Treating, giant pumpkin decorating, games, and activities, refreshments, and more. Due to construction at Somerville High School, the haunted pathway element of the event will be replaced this year with painting giant pumpkins as well as children’s games, sponsored by the Somerville Recreation Department.
