Now Accepting Applications for Newly Established Jobs Creation and Retention Trust Board of Trustees

Trustees to manage Jobs Creation and Retention Trust fund, work with stakeholders to implement workforce development strategies, and more

SOMERVILLE – The City of Somerville is currently seeking applicants for the newly created Jobs Creation and Retention Trust (JCRT) Board of Trustees. Responsibilities for members will include managing the JCRT fund, working with the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) staff to implement strategies outlined in the workforce development strategic plan released early this year, identifying target industry sectors and resident demographics for job training programs, soliciting project proposals, and more.

Somerville Seeks Members and Advisors for Vision Zero Task Force

Task Force will identify and recommend policies and safety improvements to be included in Vision Zero Action Plan.

The City of Somerville is seeking applicants for a newly formed Vision Zero Task Force. In September 2017, the City announced the launch of Vision Zero Somerville, reaffirming Somerville’s commitment to multi-modal road safety. The initiative will take a multi-department, data-driven approach to improving safety for all road users, whether on bicycles or on foot, in vehicles, or aboard public transit. The Task Force will explore potential policy and infrastructure changes the City may include in the upcoming Somerville Vision Zero Action Plan.

New Passenger Drop-off, Pickup Zones Established in Union Square

Zones aim to eliminate double-parking in traffic lanes and increase safety for all modes of transportation

SOMERVILLE – In an effort to increase safety and reduce congestion in one of Somerville’s busiest squares, a passenger drop-off and pickup only zone has been established in Union Square. The pickup and drop-off zones are open to all users including the public, taxis, and rideshare services. Parking and idling more than five minutes in the designated zones are prohibited. The spaces are located between 345 and 347 Somerville Ave. near the entrance to Bow Market.

Community Note: Annual 9/11 Vigil Walk Scheduled in Somerville

The City's annual vigil walk, in honor of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, at 6 p.m. The vigil will begin with a procession stepping off from the Cedar Street intersection of the Community Path, and will conclude with a short ceremony in Davis Square. The entire Somerville community is invited to participate. For more information, please call Jackie Rossetti at 617-625-6600, ext. 2614.

West Nile Virus Risk Elevated to High as Fourth Case Announced in Greater Boston

Risk level raised to high in 11 Greater Boston communities

BOSTON (August 27, 2018) - The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) today announced the fourth human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in the state this year. The person is a woman in her 50s from Middlesex County who was never hospitalized for her illness. Three other cases were reported on Friday.

Winter Hill Community Innovation School Ribbon Cutting September 10

Join Mayor Joseph Curtatone, Ward 4 Alderman Jesse Clingan, and Superintendent of Schools Mary Skipper on Monday, September 10, at 10 a.m. for a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Winter Hill Community Innovation School. The ribbon cutting will celebrate school improvements including roof, window and door replacement funded by the City and its partners at the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA), as well as the second phase of renovations to the schoolyard. Schoolyard renovations include 3 new playgrounds, an outdoor classroom, and a new basketball court.

Share Your Thoughts on the Future of Central Hill - Tuesday, Sept. 25, 6 p.m.

The City of Somerville is developing a campus plan for Central Hill, home to City Hall, Somerville High School, the Central Library, and Central Playground. Please join us on Tuesday, September 25, at 6 p.m. for a meeting in the High School cafeteria to help shape the plan. Suspect in Somerville Armed Robbery Arrested in Boston

Update: On Friday, September 7, members of the Boston Police Fugitive Unit with assistance from the Somerville Police Department and Massachusetts State Police arrested Lorne Harrison, 53, of Mattapan, on a warrant for Armed Robbery and other violations. Somerville Police have confirmed that Harrison is the suspect being sought this week following an armed robbery of Kay Jewelers at Assembly Row in Somerville on August 30, 2018. Harrison will be arraigned in U.S. Federal Court.

Somerville Arts Council Announces Local Cultural Council Grant Program for 2019

The Somerville Arts Council is pleased to announce the availability of its 2019 Local Cultural Council (LCC) grant program. Artists, community groups, and schools may apply for funding to the Council for projects and fellowships for 2019. The deadline for submissions is October 15, 2018.
