Celebrate the Completion of Prospect Hill Tower, Sep. 19

Join Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 3 Alderman Robert J. McWatters, the Community Preservation Committee and Community Preservation Act (CPA) project implementers on Monday, September 19, at 6 p.m. for a celebration to mark the reopening of Prospect Hill Tower. The Prospect Hill Tower rehabilitation is the first project to be completed with Somerville CPA funds. Attendees will gather at 6 p.m. at the Prospect Hill Tower for a short speaking program followed by the opportunity to climb Prospect Hill Tower and hear the lesser known history of Prospect Hill.

POW/MIA flag to be raised to acknowledge national day of recognition

SOMERVILLE – A POW/MIA flag raising ceremony will take place at Somerville City Hall on Friday, September 16, at 10 a.m. in honor of the 37th annual National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

First observed in 1979, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is a day to honor returned prisoners of war and those members of the U.S. military, as well as civilians, who are still missing and unaccounted for from past wars. The day also serves to support ongoing search efforts for the missing.

Annual Domestic Violence Vigil to be Held October 5

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, the Somerville Commission for Women, and RESPOND announce the Annual Candlelight Vigil in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month on Wednesday, October 5, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Statue Park in Davis Square.

The vigil is an annual event bringing the community together in remembrance of those who have lost their lives over the last year to domestic violence.

In addition to the vigil, there will be a display of the Clothesline Project, a visual display that honors survivors as well as victims of intimate partner violence.

Member Sought for Community Preservation Committee

SOMERVILLE – Do you have a passion for parks, affordable housing, and historic preservation? The City of Somerville wants your help and is now accepting applications for one public position on the Community Preservation Committee, which oversees the selection of projects to be recommended for funding by an estimated $2 million in annual Community Preservation Act (CPA) revenues. Residents are encouraged to apply and applications must be submitted by October 21, 2016.

Somerville to Allow Permit Applications for Four Medical Marijuana Dispensaries

SOMERVILLE – Somerville Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has accepted the recommendation of the City’s Medical Marijuana Advisory Committee to allow four* applicants to seek special permits to open medical marijuana dispensaries at four committee-approved locations in Somerville.

Drop-In Meeting to Discuss Beacon Street Reconstruction, Oct. 26

Join the City’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development, MassDOT and construction teams on Wednesday, October 26, from 6 to 7 p.m., for a drop-in Q&A regarding the ongoing Beacon Street Reconstruction Project. City and project staff will be at the Thirsty Scholar Pub, 70 Beacon Street, to answer questions and concerns as the construction season winds down for the winter. There is no presentation; drop in for five minutes, or stay for 50 minutes and chat with the project teams, and support a local business in the process!

Community Invited to Submit Logo Ideas & Sketches for Somerville’s 175th Birthday

SOMERVILLE – Did you know?: in 2017, the City of Somerville is celebrating its 175th birthday, 175 years since we separated from Charlestown, and we’re celebrating all year long. The events will kick off in January 2017, at the City’s Mid-Term Address and Ceremonies, where we will unveil the official 175th birthday banner and logo. This is where you come in! We are seeking logo ideas and sketches to be considered for the 175th celebrations. Winning logo(s) will be featured on all banners, signage, and memorabilia for the year, and will receive a $200 honorarium.
