STRICTER ETHICS ORDINANCE PROPOSED BY MAYOR

Would require elected officials’ disclosure of communications about permit and license applications, citations, sanctions, personnel matters

SOMERVILLE
– Strengthening the City of Somerville’s commitment to open government and transparency,
Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has filed a proposed expansion of the City’s ethics
ordinance that would require elected officials to file disclosures of their
communications with any person or representative seeking a permit or license from
the City in connection with the permit or license.

Somerville youth ages 16 and older eligible to apply for summer employment within City departments, with local retailers; Applications due 4/24

Nancy Bacci announced that applications are now available for the 2014 Mayor’s Summer Jobs
Program. Available through Thursday, April 24, applications can be found at the
City of Somerville’s Personnel Department, located in the basement at City
Hall, 93 Highland Ave.  The Program
provides opportunities for Somerville youth to gain employment and job training

This afternoon we were briefed by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz about a deeply disturbing matter that we anticipate will involve our city, as well as the City of Cambridge. An individual who had been entrusted to care for our children has allegedly violated that trust at the highest level.

This individual, identified as Josh Wairi, age 27, a former elementary school teacher in Somerville and most recently in Cambridge, has been accused of videotaping young children in various states of undress. He has also been accused to viewing and sharing child pornography.

On Monday,
April 21, 2014, during the early morning hours, a woman reported to the
Somerville Police that she was the victim of an assault near the 300 block of
Beacon Street.  She had departed the
Porter Square MBTA Station and was walking alone on Beacon Street when her
attacker grabbed her from behind and made an attempt to force her into a nearby
alley.  The victim was able to scream and

– Want to help determine how the City of Somerville should spend at least $1.5
million on affordable housing, open space, outdoor recreation and historic
preservation projects? The Somerville Community
Preservation Committee
will gather public feedback at two public hearings
in May that will assist in finalizing the criteria the Committee uses to
determine which projects are recommended for funding through the Community
Preservation Act (CPA).

In joint effort between CHA, Cataldo Ambulance, Somerville Board of Health and Somerville Fire Department, nasal Narcan is in full service on all equipment.

Curtatone and Chief Fire Engineer Kevin Kelleher announced this week that all
Somerville Fire Department companies are equipped with nasal Naloxone (Narcan),
a prescription medication that can reverse an opioid overdose. In a joint
effort with the Cambridge Health Alliance, Cataldo Ambulance, and the
Somerville Board of Health and Trauma Response Network, Somerville Firefighters
completed training on administering the prescription to victims of drug
