Taste of Somerville returns June 14th at Nathan Tufts Park

The Somerville Chamber of Commerce has announced the date and a new location for the 2017 Taste of Somerville. The Taste has been growing in popularity year over year —the last 3 years were sold-out serving over 1,200 guests. The event will take place on Wednesday, June 14th from 5-8pm.

Book a Sunsetters Performance in Your Neighborhood this Summer!

The Somerville Sunsetters are coming to a street near you! The Sunsetters, a traveling youth performance troupe that performs classic show tunes and modern musicals in Somerville neighborhoods throughout July and August, is now booking shows for the summer 2017 season. Residents interested in hosting a performance in your neighborhood should contact Jackie Rossetti at 617-625-6600 ext. 2614, or JRossetti@somervillema.gov. Performances are held Monday through Thursday evenings, 7 to 8 p.m., in July and August. Some blackout dates apply.

Call to Community to Take Part in Planning Process for Somerville Comprehensive Climate Change Plan

Plan to identify strategies for reducing Somerville’s impact on climate change and preparing city for its impacts

SOMERVILLE – Members of the Somerville community concerned about climate change and determined to stick to the goals of the Paris Climate Accord, have a direct opportunity to get involved locally. On June 26th, the City of Somerville will launch the next phase of their planning process to create a new climate change plan. The plan, called Somerville Climate Forward, will serve as the city’s comprehensive strategy for addressing climate change. Somerville Climate Forward will identify actionable short- and medium-term policies, projects, and programs around two key goals:

Somerville Parks & Recreation Department to Oversee Maintenance, Increase Programming at Boat House

The City of Somerville and the Somerville Parks & Recreation Department, under the leadership of Director Jill Lathan, are proud to announce that the City of Somerville recently won a statewide bid to conduct maintenance, operations and additional programming at the Blessing of the Bay Boat House on Shore Drive. Earlier this year, a Request for Proposals was issued by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), which owns and formerly operated the boat house and surrounding green space.

Join Historic Preservation Commission for Tours of Milk Row Cemetery, Prospect Hill Tower

The Somerville Historic Preservation Commission (SHPC) and Historic Somerville announces its annual Docent Tours of historic sites in Somerville. For the first time, the series will also include Docent-led tours of the old Powder House, located between Ball Square and Teele Square. Tours are also available at the Milk Row Cemetery on Somerville Ave., and for the Prospect Hill Tower. Tours will be held as follows:

How to Fix the World Festival Set for Sun, June 18 in Union Square

Celebrate Somerville’s 175th Flag Day at the Site of the Nation’s First Flag Raising

Two events honoring the Grand Union Flag and Somerville’s history planned for June 17

SOMERVILLE – Did you know?  Recent research by historian Byron DeLear has discovered that the Grand Union Flag, first flown atop Somerville’s Prospect Hill in 1776, was not just the first flag of the united colonies, but the first flag of the United States?  Join the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission and Historic Somerville on Saturday, June 17 to hear DeLear present his findings about the Grand Union Flag and Somerville’s role in the Revolutionary War era.

Winter Hill Schoolyard Construction Set to Begin June 21

Construction for phase one of the Winter Hill Schoolyard project is scheduled to begin on the Thurston St. level on Wednesday, June 21, 2017. The first phase involves transferring the asphalt court on the lower level into a turf playing field.
