APPLY FOR NEW RECREATION TASK FORCE by 4/16

Citizen task force to explore and recommend enhancements to recreational programming; Applications due April 16

SOMERVILLE - Mayor Curtatone
invites residents who have a passion for recreation in Somerville to serve on
the newly formed Recreation Task Force. The Task Force will review the current
recreation programming available to Somerville residents of all ages and make
recommendations on how the City might strengthen its offerings. Members will
meet at least monthly for the next eight months starting in late-April.
Applications are due Wednesday, April 16 (see below).

COMMUNITY INPUT SOUGHT FOR NEW POWDER HOUSE REDEVELOPMENT PLAN

Curtatone announced today that the City of Somerville will issue a new Request
for Proposals (RFP) for redevelopment of the Powder House Community School site
and will schedule a community meeting later this month to discuss the terms to
be included in the new RFP, after rejecting the five remaining proposals and
canceling its existing RFP.

CITY EARNS BUDGET AWARD FOR MEETING HIGHEST PRINCIPLES OF GOVERNMENTAL BUDGETING

Receives Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from Government Finance Officers Association

SOMERVILLE
–Somerville’s commitment to the highest principles of governmental budgeting
has been recognized in the City earning the Distinguished Budget Presentation
Award, a “significant achievement” according to awarding nonprofit Government Finance Officers Association of the
United States and Canada
(GFOA).

STRICTER ETHICS ORDINANCE PROPOSED BY MAYOR

Would require elected officials’ disclosure of communications about permit and license applications, citations, sanctions, personnel matters

SOMERVILLE
– Strengthening the City of Somerville’s commitment to open government and transparency,
Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone has filed a proposed expansion of the City’s ethics
ordinance that would require elected officials to file disclosures of their
communications with any person or representative seeking a permit or license from
the City in connection with the permit or license.

Nancy Bacci announced that applications are now available for the 2014 Mayor’s Summer Jobs
Program. Available through Thursday, April 24, applications can be found at the
City of Somerville’s Personnel Department, located in the basement at City
Hall, 93 Highland Ave.  The Program
provides opportunities for Somerville youth to gain employment and job training

This afternoon we were briefed by U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz about a deeply disturbing matter that we anticipate will involve our city, as well as the City of Cambridge. An individual who had been entrusted to care for our children has allegedly violated that trust at the highest level.

This individual, identified as Josh Wairi, age 27, a former elementary school teacher in Somerville and most recently in Cambridge, has been accused of videotaping young children in various states of undress. He has also been accused to viewing and sharing child pornography.
