The City of Somerville Council on Aging Board of Directors seeks seven new members, and all Somerville residents are invited to apply. Boards and commissions offer an opportunity for residents with a range of experience, skills, expertise, and perspectives to share their talents and insights with their community.

The City of Somerville’s Racial and Social Justice (RSJ) Department invites the community to a virtual forum to meet department staff, learn about their work, and find out how to get involved on Thursday, March 31, beginning at 6 p.m. Register online, or call 311 to get call-in information. Interpretation into Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Nepali, Mandarin, and American Sign Language will be provided.

The Somerville Housing Authority (SHA) Board of Commissioners seeks one new member, and all Somerville residents are invited to apply. This position does not have to be filled by an SHA resident, but SHA residents are encouraged to apply. Boards and commissions offer an opportunity for residents with a range of experience, skills, expertise, and perspectives to share their talents and insights with their community.

As part of Mayor Katjana Ballanytne’s First 100 Day Agenda and the City’s ongoing work to ensure an equitable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, Mayor Ballantyne will be hosting small-group listening sessions with Somerville residents and workers disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal is to listen to community experiences and gather ideas and input on how the City can support the recovery. Listening sessions will be jointly facilitated by the Mayor and interested members of the community.

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne announces that the City of Somerville is launching mattress and box spring recycling starting the week of April 4, 2022. This free service is available to all residential households that have City-managed trash collection. Residents will simply need to schedule a pickup and place their items on the curb on the pickup day. 

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and the Somerville Parking Department remind all residents that regular street sweeping schedules officially resume Friday, April 1, and continue through December 31, 2022.

On designated street sweeping days, vehicles must be moved from the side of the street being swept, as noted on signs posted on each street. The penalty for not complying with street sweeping parking regulations is a $50 fine. Community members are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the street sweeping schedule in areas where they park.

Calling all Somerville high school students! Apply for the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program starting Monday, April 4.  

Through this annual program, the City of Somerville hires teenage participants to work in the Parks and Recreation Department, Somerville Public Libraries, and other City offices. As part of her First 100 Days Agenda, Mayor Katjana Ballantyne has expanded this year’s program to include jobs focused on climate justice for the first time, within the Department of Public Works.  

On Monday, April 18, for the first time since 2017, the City of Somerville will be celebrating Patriots’ Day outdoors and in person at Foss Park on Broadway from 10 to 11:30 a.m. 

This event will feature a reenactment of Paul Revere’s famous ride from Boston to Lexington — which happened to pass right through Somerville!
