“Inclusion Drives Innovation,” a Celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Planned for October 24

The Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities invites all community members to its annual event in celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, on Tuesday, October 24, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The event, “Inclusion Drives Innovation,” will take place on at the Highlander Café at Somerville High School (atrium entrance), and will feature visual art, poetry, music, and a panel discussion led by Colleen Flanagan, Executive Director of Disability Action for America and Adriana Malozzi, Founder and CEO of Puffin.

New Somerville Policy First in MA to Add Controls, Require Public Transparency for Surveillance Technology

Executive order balances privacy and civil liberty protections with police investigative and public safety needs; Requires new approval, operational, and public notification protocols

SOMERVILLE – As surveillance technology use grows nationally, the City of Somerville has joined 19 U.S. cities and two states working with the ACLU to protect individual rights while preserving public safety. On Oct. 4, with the full support of the Somerville Police Department, Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone signed the Executive Policy on Surveillance Technology, which is believed to be the first such policy implemented in the Commonwealth.

Update on Officer Louis Remigio of the Somerville Police Department

SOMERVILLE – It is with extreme sadness that we announce the death of our brother, Officer Louis Remigio. On Monday night, October 9, Officer Remigio succumbed to injuries sustained while involved in a motor vehicle accident on I-95 in North Hampton, New Hampshire, on Sunday, October 8.

New Reusable Water Bottle Refilling Station Installed in Davis Square

'Story Time with Mayor Curtatone' on Oct. 21 at Central Library

Join Mayor Joe Curtatone, the Somerville Public Library, and Somerville-based Publisher Candlewick Press for an afternoon story time on Saturday, October 21. Mayor Curtatone will read Windows — a new picture book set in Somerville!
 
Julia Denos and E.B. Goodale, author and illustrator of Windows, will join the mayor for this very special story time to answer questions about the book.

“Haunted Hall” Event Returns to City Hall Concourse November 2, 2017

FREE Halloween event features pumpkin decorating, activities for kids, haunted “house,” and more!

SOMERVILLE – Join the City of Somerville on Thursday, November 2, for the annual “Haunted Hall” event on the City Hall concourse from 6 to 8 p.m. The family-friendly event will feature a costumed Halloween Stroll, safe Trick-or-Treating, games and activities, refreshments, a Haunted “Hallway” tour, and more.

Young attendees are invited to participate in the annual “Halloween Stroll,” stepping off at 6:15 p.m. Costumes are encouraged for all ages, and all “haunted” elements will be appropriate for attendees of all ages.

Neighborhood Meeting to Discuss Upcoming Repairs to Drainage Along Community Path, November 2

Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone, Ward 6 Alderman Lance Davis, and the City of Somerville Engineering Department invite residents to a community meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss upcoming construction to drainage systems abutting a portion of the Community Path. The meeting will be held on Thursday, November 2, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Baptist Church at 31 College Ave. Impacted sections include the area between Willow Ave. and Grove St., and along portions of Winslow Ave.

Saturday, Oct. 28 is National Take Back Day

Help us keep our youth safe by properly disposing of unused and unwanted medications.

Somerville residents are encouraged to dipose of unwanted medications safely and properly.  There is always a permanent Med Return Drug Collection Kiosk in the lobby of the Somerville Police Department, 220 Washington Street in Somerville.  Disposal is free, anonymous and available 24/7.  The following items can be deposited in the kiosk:
 
  • Prescription and over-the-counter medications
  • Pet medications
  • Samples of medications
  • Pills, capsules, inhalers, ointment and patches
  • Vitamins
