City of Somerville Announces Sex and Gender Identification No Longer Required to Receive a Marriage Certificate

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and City Clerk Kimberly M. Wells are pleased to announce that the City of Somerville has updated its marriage certification process, so partners are no longer compelled to share their sex or gender identification. The update is part of Somerville’s ongoing commitment to creating a more equitable environment for all residents, and mirrors the recent example set by the City of Boston.

Final Segment of Somerville Community Path Extension Now Open for Public Use

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne is pleased to announce that the final segment of the Community Path Extension between School St. and the Gilman Square Green Line station entrance at Medford St is now open. While the full community path extension was officially opened in June, this section of the path remained closed due to a detour needed to complete construction of Somerville High School Reavis Field.

This is the last monthly Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day until April 2024.

A virtual Public Hearing on the City’s proposals for zoning changes to meet new MBTA Communities law requirements will be held at a joint session of the City Council Land Use Committee and the Planning Board at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, October 19.  

Somerville Police Chief Search Interview Survey/Feedback Deadline Extended Through Sunday 10/22

Three finalists in the City of Somerville's Police Chief search participated in public interviews on October 10, and community members are invited to review the interview videos and provide feedback on the candidates. The deadline for community members to submit comments has been extended through Sunday, October 22, at midnight. To learn more about the finalists and the process, visit somervillema.gov/policechief
