Day-Long Workshop to Explore Area, Discuss Vision for Neighborhood

An innovative public meeting – called a “Walkshop,” with participants taking photographs and discussing the results of their photography – will take place on Saturday, June 25th, from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Focused on the Inner Belt/Brickbottom area,  the subject of a major new planning initiative undertaken by the Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD), the “Walkshop” will kick off from the Holiday Inn on Washington Street, and give participants the ability to identify and capture opportunities for change throughout Inner Belt, Brickbottom, and along the southern edge of Washington Street (including New Washington Street).  Photo documentation during the walk will serve as the basis for small- and large-group discussion on issues such as walkability, urban design, transportation, and a range of other issues of concern to participants.

The Walkshop will be conducted by Goody Clancy, a planning/architecture firm headquartered in Boston and under contract with the City to lead the Inner Belt/Brickbottom Planning Study.

The day’s agenda includes the “Walkshop” and photoshoot in the morning, lunch, and breakout group discussions in the afternoon.  Attendees have the option of participating as a “freelance photographer” in the morning, or joining the afternoon session to look at and discuss the photographs in a large group.  The event is part of the City’s overall commitment to facilitating community feedback, and the planning effort itself is being undertaken in parallel with the City’s 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Plan, or SomerVision.
