Statement from Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne on Incoming Cold Weather Event

“Our area is facing a historic cold weather event and I urge everyone, in the strongest possible terms, to stay safe, be prepared, and do what Somerville always does best, which is check in on your neighbors especially the elderly, persons with disabilities, or others who may need assistance.

Do not hesitate to contact Somerville Police via 911 to report emergencies or persons in distress outside or 311 to report heat outages or other non-emergency needs. We will be ready to respond swiftly to help keep all community members safe.

Police are also set to search for and support unsheltered persons in accessing shelter. For anyone who must brave the weather - please take proper precautions to protect yourself, frostbite can occur in a matter of minutes during the predicted temperatures.

The City is disseminating severe cold weather safety information through all Somerville communication channels. We are also collaborating across all departments to ensure we are well prepared to respond to any potential infrastructure impacts resulting from the cold weather.”
