Powder House Boulevard and Alewife Brook Parkway Intersection Redesign Community Meeting, February 1, 2023

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne and Ward 7 Councilor Judy Pineda Neufeld invite you to a virtual community meeting to learn about the City’s reconstruction of the intersection at Powder House Boulevard and Alewife Brook Parkway. 

City contractors will reconstruct the existing traffic circle to create a T-shaped intersection with traffic signals. Construction will begin this winter and is expected to continue through the fall of 2024.

The meeting will take place virtually Wednesday, February 1, at 6 p.m. Visit somervillema.gov/intersectionredesign to register to attend. 

The new intersection design is intended to improve safety for all road users by enhancing pedestrian and bicycle connections, improving access for residents, and slowing drivers. This project is funded with support from the Commonwealth’s MassWorks Infrastructure Program.

The current intersection is a high-crash location (48 crashes between 2014 and 2021). Focusing efforts on the intersections where the greatest number of crashes occur is a key part of the City's Vision Zero Action Plan to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries from our transportation system.

In addition to improving the intersection design, this project will also rehabilitate aging underground infrastructure and create a new shared street. A shared street is a low-volume residential street that prioritizes people walking, rolling, and biking.

At this meeting, City staff will review the final design and planned improvements as well as provide an overview of the construction process and timeline. Residents will then have the opportunity to ask questions about the project and construction process.
