Join the Somerville Urban Design Commission as an Alternate Member

The City of Somerville is seeking two alternate members to join the Urban Design Commission (UDC).

What is the Urban Design Commission?

The Urban Design Commission plays a vital role in reviewing how the design of proposed development will affect the quality of Somerville’s public spaces, and provides advice and recommendations to City Staff.

The UDC aims to:

  • Review new development for improvements and enhancements to public space
  • Consider the continuity and enclosure of facades forming the streetwall
  • Foster new development that is aesthetically compatible with existing buildings and infrastructure
  • Support sustainable and adaptable design throughout the public spaces of the city
  • Encourage originality and creativity in the design of new buildings and additions, or the remodeling of existing buildings
  • Maintain, protect, and enhance the existing urban character of Somerville neighborhoods

What Do Committee Members Do?

The UDC conducts design reviews of development proposals, providing advice and recommendations to other Review Boards regarding how proposed designs will impact Somerville’s public realm. They also advise City Staff when required by a permit condition issued by the Review Boards. Alternate members participate in all discussions and vote in place of full members when they are absent from meetings.

Who Can Join?

We are seeking two alternate members. A background or interest in urban design, community planning, landscape design, or architecture is beneficial but not required. Any Somerville resident with an interest in these areas is welcome to apply.

What is the Time Commitment?

The UDC typically meets virtually via Zoom on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. Meetings last two to three hours.

How Are Members Appointed?

Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
