Join the Somerville Mayor’s Appointments Advisory Committee

Are you passionate about community engagement and civic responsibility? The Mayor’s Appointments Advisory Committee (AAC) is seeking two volunteers to join its efforts in ensuring fair, informed, and nonpartisan recommendations for appointments to Somerville’s regulatory and decision-making boards and commissions.

About the AAC

The AAC is a five-member volunteer body tasked with reviewing applications and recommending candidates for open seats on 14 critical boards and commissions in Somerville, including:

  • Affordable Housing Trust Fund
  • Board of Health
  • Condominium Review Board
  • Conservation Commission
  • Design Review Committee
  • Ethics Commission
  • Historic Preservation Commission
  • Housing Authority Board
  • Job Creation and Retention Trust Board
  • Licensing Commission
  • Planning Board
  • Redevelopment Authority
  • Traffic Commission
  • Zoning Board of Appeals

The AAC does not oversee reappointments but plays a key role in ensuring new appointees are well-suited to their roles.

Responsibilities and Commitment

When there is an open seat on a board or commission, the AAC meets bi-weekly on Wednesdays from 7:00–9:00 p.m. via virtual platforms. Members review applications and background materials, interview finalists, and recommend two candidates per vacancy to the Mayor. Members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.

Why Join the AAC?

This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to Somerville’s future by helping shape the leadership of its boards and commissions.
