Important Dates and Deadlines for the November 2 Election

On Tuesday, November 2, voters in Somerville will cast ballots for Mayor of Somerville; four City Councilor-at-Large seats; Ward City Councilor in Wards 2, 5, and 7; and School Committee Members in Wards 3 and 7. Below is information on upcoming deadlines related to the election as well as information about options for voting.

Voter Registration Deadline

Voters have until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, to register to vote or update their voter information for the November 2 election.

Massachusetts voters have the option to register online or via a paper form. To register by mail, call (617) 625-6600 ext. 4200 and request a form be mailed to you or download one from the Elections website, somervillema.gov/elections. Don’t forget that your form must be received by the Somerville Elections Department by 8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13.

Voting by Mail

Voters who would like to vote by mail and have not already requested a ballot for the November 2 election have until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, to submit their application. Applications must be received by the Elections Department, not postmarked, by this deadline.

A vote-by-mail application can be obtained three ways:

• Download an application from the City website: Visit somervillema.gov/VoteByMail.
• Pick up an application at City Hall: Vote-by-mail application forms also will be available at the Elections Department of City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue. You can fill out and submit your application on the spot. Please remember that face coverings are required in all indoor public spaces.
• Have an application mailed to you: To request that the Somerville Elections Department mail you a vote-by-mail application, call the Elections Department at (617) 625-6600 ext. 4200. 

There are several options for voters to return their vote-by-mail ballot application or ballot:

• Drop boxes: Voters can use one of the drop boxes located around the city to return their application or ballot. Please note that drop boxes will be closed at 5 p.m. on election night to allow time for ballots to be processed. Drop boxes are located at:
  
  • City Hall concourse, 93 Highland Ave.
  • East Somerville Community School, across from 68 Glen St.
  • In front of the Argenziano School, 290 Washington St.
  • In front of the Somerville Community Baptist Church at 31 College Ave.
  • In front of the West Somerville Neighborhood School at 177 Powder House Blvd.
• City Hall drop-off: Voters can return applications or ballots directly to the Elections Department in City Hall, 93 Highland Ave. 
• Mail: Voters can return applications and ballots by sending them to the Elections Department, 93 Highland Ave., Somerville, MA 02143. Make sure to leave plenty of time for mail to reach the Elections Department before the deadline.
• Email or fax (for applications only): Completed vote-by-mail ballot applications can be emailed to vote@somervillema.gov or faxed to (617) 625-5643. Ballots cannot be returned by email or fax.

Eligible voters who submit valid applications to vote by mail will receive their election ballot in the mail. Ballots must be completed, signed, sealed, and received by the City no later than 8 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2. Voters can check the status of their ballot at bit.ly/MABallotTrack2021. 

Early Voting

Seven days of early voting will be held prior to Election Day. All early voting takes place in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 93 Highland Ave. Early voting days and times are as follows:

• Saturday, October 23 - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Sunday, October 24 - 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Monday, October 25 - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Tuesday, October 26 - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Wednesday, October 27 - 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Thursday, October 28 - 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
• Friday, October 29 - 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Voting on Election Day

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 2. Voters can check their polling location or Ward and Precinct by entering their address at somervillema.gov/mysomerville or calling 311.
