CITY PARTNERS WITH WELCOME PROJECT’S “YUM” CAMPAIGN TO HOST “A TASTE OF IMMIGRANT CITY” RESTAURANT EVENT 4/25

At Center for Arts at the Armory, event to feature ten Somerville restaurants with food from around the world; Restaurants also participate in City’s “Shape Up Somerville-Approved” healthy eating program.

SOMERVILLE - The general public is invited to join Mayor
Joseph Curtatone, Shape Up Somerville and the Welcome Project's "YUM"
Restaurant Campaign on Wednesday, April 25th for YUM:
A Taste of Immigrant City
, a tasting event to showcase some of the
City's worldwide cuisine as interpreted by Shape Up Somerville-approved
restaurants.  Ten immigrant-run
restaurants from across the City will feature menu items from all over the
world, and this year YUM restaurants and Shape Up Somerville have partnered to
offer healthy menu options in line with the City's campaign to increase access
to fresh, wholesome, healthy foods.  The
event will be held from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Center for Arts at the Armory,
191 Highland Ave.

"One of the most enjoyable features of Somerville life is
our rich cultural diversity. One third of residents were born outside the U.S. and
more than 50 different languages are spoken at home by the students in our
public schools.  It should come as no
surprise that we have some of the best international flavors on the east
coast," Mayor Curtatone said.  "Our local
restaurants offer tastes of India, Istanbul, Haiti, Italy, Africa, Tibet,
Brazil, the Caribbean, the Balkans, Thailand, and more.  This event will offer a great peek at some of
our talented chefs and local restaurants, and I'm looking forward to tasting
each menu item."

The
YUM Restaurant Campaign is a Welcome Project program supporting immigrant-run
restaurants in the
city. Proceeds from their discount cards sold each year - granting 10% off of
orders of $25 or more - benefit immigrant advocacy and support services. Participating
restaurants receive free promotion from The Welcome Project and attend this
yearly event where they bring free tastings from their menus.

"YUM
is a great opportunity to taste - in one evening - the incredible diversity of
cultures and cuisines in our city," said Warren Goldstein-Gelb, Director at The
Welcome Project. "The funds we raise support the success of immigrant families
and strengthen the cultural richness of Somerville all year long."
