City to Celebrate 175th March 29 with a “Very Somerville” Party at Somerville-Charlestown Line

Live music, Somerville-made root beer toast, and launch of Aeronaut Brewing’s “Municipal Freedom Gives National Strength” gluten free beer, capped off with a rendition of “Happy Birthday!”

SOMERVILLE – The month of March officially marks 175 years since Somerville separated from Charlestown (in 1842), and we’re throwing a birthday party that is “very Somerville.” Join us at the Somerville-Charlestown city limits on East Broadway (in front of the Mount Vernon restaurant) on Wednesday, March 29, from 5 to 7 p.m., for live music, a toast to our City’s birthday, and to help us sing the Happy Birthday song in true Somerville style. Following the outdoor ceremony, we’ll head over to the Mount Vernon for some light refreshments, birthday cake, and the official launch of a special “Municipal Freedom Gives National Strength” (our City motto) gluten free beer, brewed specially by Somerville’s own Aeronaut Brewing Company. The reception at Mount Vernon will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., in the back room.

To toast to Somerville’s birthday, we’ll pour celebratory glasses of Prospect Hill Bottling Company’s Tower Root Beer, Cream Soda, and Ginger Ale. The company was founded in Somerville in 1914.

We’ll be celebrating our 175 years all year long, so be sure to visit www.somervillema.gov/somerville175 for news and updates, and to submit your favorite Somerville story, photo, or memory from past or present. We’ll collect all stories for displaying in a gallery at the end of the year. We hope you’ll join us to celebrate!
