“GOING GREEN ON RT. 16 @ SOMERSTREETS” SET FOR AUGUST 18th
August’s installment of Open Streets series to feature local “green” initiatives and businesses, live entertainment, activities, food and more
SomerStreets is the City of Somerville's take on the internationally-renowned Open Streets concept, closing busy city streets to vehicles, and opening them up for cycling, walking, dancing, running, and other modes of activity. Through SomerStreets, the City and its community partners aim to promote and encourage easy access to physical activity, fresh foods, and reconnecting with neighborhoods and businesses and their unique cultural elements in a thriving urban environment.
Along Route 16 activities for children and adults of all ages will include, but are not limited to:
-
"Car Free Somerville" Contest
-
Curious Creatures exhibit (2-4 p.m.)
-
Live entertainment
-
Craft fair
-
"Green" initiative business displays
-
Free Swim at Dilboy Pool
-
9-hole mini golf course
-
Food and family friendly activities
-
Free snacks at Stop & Shop
Remaining 2013 SomerStreets events include Strike Up the Bands (Holland Street) on Sunday, September 8th and Monster Mashed-Up @ SomerStreets on Sunday, October 20th.
SomerStreets builds on the Shape Up Somerville healthy living initiative. Similar open streets events take place all around the world, providing space normally taken up by automobile traffic for people to be more active. Special attention this year is being paid to providing fresh food at SomerStreets.
All SomerStreets events will run from 12-4 p.m., rain or shine. If you have any questions, please contact Carlene Campbell at 857-523-9017.
