About Elections
The Somerville Elections Department oversees all local, state, and federal elections, registers voters, and keeps election-related public records, including campaign finance reports. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on election days.
Register to Vote
Register to vote online or by mailing in your application. You must be a U.S. citizen, a Somerville resident, and at least 16 years old on or before the next local election and 18 before the next state and federal elections.
Early Voting
Vote early at City Hall:
- Saturdays and Sundays: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
- Thursdays: 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
- Fridays: 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

- Notice of Advanced Removal of Early Voted Ballots from Envelopes and Advanced Depositing of Early Voted Ballots
In accordance with the provisions of Chapter 54 section 25B as amended by Section 10 of Chapter 92 of the Acts of 2022, the City of Somerville will be opening and depositing early voted ballots at City Hall, 93 Highland Ave at the following sessions:
- Sunday, October 27th - 11:30 a.m.
- Monday, October 28th - 9 a.m.
- Tuesday, October 29th - 9 a.m.
- Wednesday, October 30th - 9 a.m.
- Thursday, October 31st - 9 a.m.
- Friday, November 1st - 9 a.m.
- Saturday, November 2nd - 11 a.m. (This is a tentative session - if you plan on attending please call the office)
- Sunday, November 3rd - 11 a.m. (This is a tentative session if you plan on attending please call the office)
- Monday, November 4th - 9 a.m.
A full record of advance removal and advance depositing will be kept for each session. In accordance with the provisions of Chapter 54 section 25B as amended by Section 10 of Chapter 92 of the Acts of 2022, no results shall be determined or announced until after the time the polls close on November 4th At that time, the results from the advance processed ballots will be added to the election day results and posted in a public place.
- Notice of Post Election Tabulation
In accordance with Chapter 92 of the Acts of 2022, known as the VOTES Act, please be advised that the City of Somerville will perform a post-election tabulation session for November 5th Election ballots returned in person or by drop box after 4 p.m. on November 5th and all ballots received by mail on or before 5 p.m. on November 10, 2024, if also postmarked by November 5, 2024.
This session will take place at City Hall, 93 Highland Ave, beginning on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 11 a.m. and will be open to the public.

Somerville residents who do not return the annual City Census form sent out each January could be removed from the list of registered voters. Completing the Census within 10 days of receipt also provides proof of residence to protect your voting rights, veteran's bonus, subsidized housing, and related benefits as well as providing information for the selection of jurors.
