Allen Street Playground and Community Garden Renovation
(Completed & Open to the Public)

December 28, 2020 Ribbon Cutting

Location: 30 Allen Street off Somerville Avenue

Garden constructed in 2007, playground constructed and gardens renovated in 2020.

Amenities: Playground for the 2-5 age group, Community Gardens, Wheelchair accessible plant beds, plaza area with café tables, drinking fountain, and bottle filler.

Additional Information: The construction of the original Allen Street Community Garden in 2007 was the result of a community-driven campaign to transform this site, which had been a vacant lot, into a new community green space.

In more recent years, however, the community’s need for a safe neighborhood recreation space for the 2-5 age group has become apparent. Therefore, through a community initiative, Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds were awarded so that a small playground could be incorporated into the underutilized space at the front of the gardens.

Additional community goals included: reconfigured community gardens to allow for additional garden plots, wider and more accessible sidewalks along the street, and permeable playground surfaces that would allow for the infiltration of stormwater.
