Somerville Expects Return to Full Central Library Hours Next Week

New security, programming, and supports will support safety and welcoming space for all

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne is announcing that the City expects the Central Library to resume normal hours by the end of next week. This follows work to enhance safety measures and expand programming for patrons of all ages. Residents are encouraged to stay updated through the City and Library websites.

Safety Enhancements in Place

On-site security will be provided by a qualified security firm trained in de-escalation, and new security cameras have been installed. Onboarding of the security firm will determine the exact date of the return to full hours, which is the week of September 30, barring any unforeseen delays.

Expanded Programming and Supportive Social Services

The City is taking steps to make the plaza outside the library a more engaging environment for community members of all ages this fall. New seating will be installed for year-round use, and the Library will host a variety of events through the end of October. Programming will include crafts, music, and more.

The City’s Recreation Department is also set to announce additional teen programming at another City location later this week. This is part of Somerville’s ongoing expansion of after-school programs for youth. Program information is available at somervillema.myrec.com

Additionally, the Central Library is in the final stages of hiring an on-site social worker, who will offer support and connect vulnerable community members to social services. This new position will help address the needs of all library patrons, further strengthening the Library’s role as a critical community resource.

“To ensure the safety and well-being of our community members, we made the difficult decision to temporarily adjust Central library hours. We've experienced an ongoing pattern of unsafe behavior that has impacted both our patrons and staff. While we understand this change has impacted patrons, it was necessary to both break the cycle and to address this issue,” said Mayor Ballantyne. “We've taken strategic steps to improve safety and supports, and I want to thank the community for its understanding and patience as we work to create a safe and welcoming environment for all.”
