Somerville to Celebrate Community Path Extension Opening with Public Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Mayor Katjana Ballantyne invites the Somerville community to celebrate the opening of the long-awaited Community Path Extension with a ribbon cutting celebration on Wednesday, June 28 at 1 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine where the Community Path Extension begins on the eastern side of where the path intersects with Lowell Street.

Mayor Ballantyne will be joined by MassDOT Transportation Secretary Gina Fiandaca, MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, state and local officials, state and city staff, and community members to celebrate the opening of this critical piece of the region’s transportation infrastructure. Following remarks, the ribbon cutting will feature music and a group traverse of a short segment of the path ending at Somerville Junction Park.

Officially opened for use on June 10, 2023, the new segment of the off-street, multi-use Community Path runs for more than 2 miles along the Green Line tracks, from Lowell Street, through Somerville Junction Park, and along the south side of the rail corridor to Cambridge Crossing. It is a key milestone in the efforts of community advocates and the City to enhance transportation equity, create more sustainable transportation options, and make Somerville a more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly city.

The ribbon cutting will also be recorded and made available for later viewing by the City’s GovTV team. Watch on-demand with optional closed-captioning (select the CC icon) on YouTube.com/SomervilleCityTV. Or watch on cable TV at GovTV Comcast Ch. 22 and GovTV Astound (RCN) Ch. 13 & 613. Videos generally post within one to two business days of recording.
