Sacramento St. Underpass Rehabilitation

Please Note: As of December 5, 2019, the rehabilitated underpass has been reopened for use. Thank you for your patience during these critical upgrades.

The Sacramento St. underpass, beneath the MBTA Fitchburg Commuter Rail tracks between Beacon St. and Somerville Ave., closed to cyclists and pedestrians starting Thursday, July 18, and is expected to reopen in Fall 2019. During the closure, cyclists and pedestrians should use Beacon St. and Somerville Ave. to travel around the work zone.

CLOSED TO CYCLISTS & PEDESTRIANS 7/18/19 UNTIL APPROX. 10/18/19

As part of this project, the existing stairs, concrete ramps, and railings will be reconstructed to improve usability and bring the underpass in compliance with ADA regulations.

Latest Updates

Updated 12/5/2019

The rehabilitated underpass has been reopened for use.

DPW crews will continue to clean up lingering snow, ice, and leaves, and contractors will tackle “punch list” items in the coming weeks, but through access is expected to remain open.

Users should take standard precautions when walking/biking in winter-weather conditions.

Updated 11/22/2019

  • About half of the railings at the Beacon St. side of the underpass remain to be installed. That work will continue during the week of November 25. Project managers hope to have an estimated reopening date early during the week of November 25.

Updated 11/1/2019

  • The underpass is now projected to reopen by the end of November. Railings at the stairs have been installed, and others are being fabricated and galvanized.

  • For additional context about the railings: Field measurements were taken after the new concrete had cured to ensure an absolute custom fit. This method of production ensures the best final product with the longest lifespan.

Updated 10/25/2019

The underpass is expected to remain closed until later this fall. The finished railings are currently being installed as others are fabricated and galvanized.

Updated 10/17/2019

The underpass is currently expected to remain closed for at least several more weeks. About half of the railings have been fabricated to date, and installation is on track to begin during the week of October 21.
