About the Condominium Review Board

The Condominium Review Board is comprised of five members (two home owners, two tenants and one elderly, handicapped or low-to-moderate income Somerville resident) chosen by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The Board is charged with the enforcement of condominium conversions and the removal of rental units from the market. The Board is responsible for conducting hearings and for surveying and updating information concerning rental units in the City.

Condominium Conversion

Property owners who intend to remove rental units from the market must apply to the Condominium Review Board and must be granted a Conversion Permit. The Board meets monthly to review conversion permit applications and vote on their issuance. In deciding whether to approve a property owner’s Condominium Conversion Application, the Board verifies that the tenant protections provided under the Somerville Condominium Conversion Ordinance are upheld and that the application and all supporting documents are complete and acceptable.

Please be advised: If you are applying for condominium conversion and currently have, or have had tenants in any of your units in the last 12 months, those tenants need at least two weeks’ notice from the Condominium Review Board prior to any hearing. Because of this, please submit your application at least three weeks prior to any hearing you would like to attend so that your tenants can receive proper notice. If you do not submit your application with enough time to allow Staff to properly notify your tenants, your application will be held over until the next meeting so proper notice can be provided. Thank you.

Meetings

The Condominium Review Board (CRB) meets each month on the last or second to last Monday of the month at 6 p.m. Complete applications and other required documents must be filed by noon on the applicable monthly due date below in order to be considered for review by the CRB at that month’s meeting. Please submit completed applications via email at condoboard@somervillema.gov or to the OSPCD Housing Division at 50 Evergreen Ave., Somerville, MA 02145. Permits are filed with the OSPCD Housing Division and will be emailed to applicants after issuance or can be picked up at the address listed above, or sent via mail, upon request.

Below is a list of the application due dates and corresponding meeting dates for this year. Completed applications are due by noon (12 p.m.) of the application deadline date.
