The Accessibility Services Division works with all City departments to ensure that everyone can access our programs, services, and buildings. Overall, our job is to empower the City’s most valuable asset – the people.
We advocate self-determination, respect, and dignity for people with disabilities. We make sure that everyone feels they can take part, and that they have the right to choose for themselves. That, in turn, ensures that everyone has the chance to successfully live, work, play, and raise a family in the City of Somerville.
We ensure that City residents and employees are protected by federal, state, and local disability laws. We do this by:
- Working with the Somerville Commission for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) to promote a community that’s inclusive and accessible for everyone. We hold regular events to increase awareness of our plans and goals throughout the City. These events celebrate equal opportunity for people with disabilities.
- Acting as a resource for City employees, residents, and businesses. We offer ADA awareness training for local schools and businesses. This helps people understand the values of an inclusive and accessible City.
- Working with residents so they can help us find and fix accessibility issues in the City.
- Making sure people with disabilities are being heard and represented within the community, and that their needs are included in all major decisions.
- Conducting surveys and meeting with department heads to ensure ADA compliance throughout Somerville.
Contact the ADA Coordinator if you need any of the following:
- Aides or services to help with communication
- Written materials in a different format, such as audiotape
- Changes to policies and procedures in order to access City programs or activities, or
- Any other accessibility concerns.
