The City is making repairs to the roof of its 90-92 Union Square building. Work is being led by the City’s Capital Project Division and is expected to begin as early as the week of February 3.
The building, a former firehouse that dates to the late 1880s, is in need of significant structural repair and was closed in August, 2023 in the interest of public safety.
Repairs to the roof are being undertaken as an interim measure to prevent further water damage to the structure from taking place. These repairs will necessitate the removal of the clock tower from the building. The clock faces and mechanisms will be retained for potential future use.

Material Abatement and Disposal
As is the case with all older buildings, some elements used in the construction of 90/92 Union Square contain materials such as non-friable asbestos* and lead that if handled and disposed of properly do not pose a health risk.
During this work, licensed abatement contractors will be on-site to remove and dispose of these materials. All abatement work will be conducted in accordance with state-approved work plans and under the supervision of an on-site air quality monitor/industrial hygienist.
*Non-friable asbestos is a type of asbestos that is generally not considered a health risk because it does not easily release fibers. Non-friable asbestos is common in older buildings and is not considered a safety risk unless improperly disturbed.
This abatement poses no risk to abutters such as nearby homes or businesses, passersby, persons using areas outside the building.
